Safety on Smitten

Dating should be fun. It should also feel safe.

Smitten lets you verify your profile, block or report anyone, keep people you know from seeing you, and decide who sees you.

Here's how each one works, and what to keep in mind before you meet someone.

Verification

Verify your profile

Verification confirms that you are who you say you are. In Sweden you verify with BankID, through Signicat's electronic ID service. You can also upload a driving licence or passport for our team to review.

  • How to verify

In the app, go to Settings, then My account, then Profile verification. If you don't see it there, verification isn't available on your account yet.

  • Filter your feed

Once you're verified, you can filter your feed to show only verified profiles.

  • What other people see

BankID confirms your name and date of birth, and they become the first name and age on your profile. Others only see your first name and age, never your full name or date of birth.

  • Your photo ID isn't kept

If you verify with a driving licence or passport, we don't store it after the check.

Blocking and reporting

Block, report or unmatch anyone, any time

If someone makes you uncomfortable, you don't have to explain yourself. Pick whichever fits.

  • Report someone

Tap Block or report at the bottom of their profile and choose Report and block, or tap the three dots in your chat and choose Report and unmatch. Pick a reason, then the specific one, and tap Submit report. Reports are anonymous.

  • Block someone

Tap Block or report at the bottom of their profile and choose Block. You won't see them again, and they won't see you unless your profile is already in their feed. You can undo it in Settings, then My account, then Blocked profiles.

  • Unmatch

Tap the three dots in your chat and choose Unmatch. Unmatching is permanent.

Your visibility

You decide who sees you

  • Pause your profile

Take a break whenever you like. While you're paused, other people can't see your profile, and you can still chat with your current matches.

  • Blocked numbers

Keep people like your ex or your boss from seeing you. Add their number in Settings, then My account, then Blocked numbers, and you won't see each other on Smitten, even if they join later.

  • Incognito mode

With Smitten Premium, turn on Incognito and only people you've liked can see your profile.

  • Matches expire

A match expires after 10 days without a message, so your chat list only holds people you're actually talking to.

Meeting up

Tips for meeting someone safely

  • Don't rush it

Get to know someone in the chat first, and be wary of anyone who's in a hurry to move the conversation off Smitten.

  • Meet somewhere public

Pick a busy café, bar or park for the first few dates, and get yourself there and back on your own terms.

  • Tell a friend your plans

Let someone you trust know who you're meeting, where, and when you expect to be home.

  • Keep your details to yourself

Never send anyone your address, social security number, passport information or card number, and never send money to someone you've met on Smitten.

Community guidelines

The short version: don't be an asshole

Everyone on Smitten agrees to our community guidelines. Breaking them can get an account suspended or banned, and you can appeal a suspension from the app.

  • 18 and over

You have to be at least 18 years old to use Smitten. If BankID shows someone is under 18, their account is blocked automatically.

  • One person, one account

Every account has one owner. No shared accounts with a partner or a friend.

  • Your own photos, with your face

Use photos you own that show your face. Impersonation is taken very seriously.

  • Zero tolerance for scams and harassment

Scamming, asking for money, targeted abuse, unsolicited sexual content and threats are all grounds for a ban.

    Read the community guidelines

How do I verify my profile with BankID?

Open Smitten, go to Settings, then My account, then Profile verification, and follow the steps. BankID verification runs through Signicat's electronic ID service.
